Heading into the final weeks before Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are tied according to an exclusive USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll.

The survey puts Harris at 45%, Trump at 44%, a closer race thanthe poll found in August. Then, in the wake of the Democratic National Convention, Harris led Trump by 5 percentage points, 48% to 43%. The poll of 1,000 likely voters, taken by landline and cellphone Oct. 14-18, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Here are some key points from the poll:

  • By double digits, voters said Harris hadn't done enough to explain the specific policies she would pursue in office, 57% to 37%. Those who want to hear more include nearly one in four, 23%, of her supporters. In contrast, those surveyed split evenly, 49% yes to 48% no, on whether Trump had done enough to explain his policies. Just 15% of his supporters want to hear more about what he would do.
  • The margins of error for the small subsamples of Latinos and Black voters are plus or minus 9 points − a potential shift of up to 18 points one way or the other − andother recent pollsshow Harris in a stronger position, including a lead among Hispanics.
  • Harris edges Trump, 46% to 44%, as the candidate who would do a better job in bringing about change − a crucial asset given wide dissatisfaction with the country's direction. She is favored by double digits, 48% to 31%, as the candidate better able to heal the nation's political divisions.

On issues, here's what the poll said:

  • Harris holds a 20-point advantage on handling abortion, 56% to 36%, and a 15-point advantage on health care, 54% to 39%.
  • Trump edges Harris, 49% to 46%, as the candidate who would do a better job in providing strong leadership.
  • Trump is more trusted to handle the economy, the top concern on voters' minds, by 10 points, 53% to 43%.
  • Trump is seen as doing a better job on immigration by 51% to 44% and on foreign policy by 51% to 45%.

Harris strong in Delaware

According to a poll conducted by the University of Delaware's Center for Political Communication, which surveyed 400 registered voters in Delaware on Sept. 11-19, Harris and other Democrats held a strong lead in Delaware.

Harris leads Trump with a 55.6% share of the vote. Trump received 35.6% of the votes in the survey, and 3.3% went for Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump.

  • Allan Lichtman, the historian renowned for accurately predicting 9 out of the 10 most recent presidential elections, has shared his prediction for this year's White House race. He forecasts thatHarriswill win. In a video first reported byThe New York Times, Lichtman explained that his prediction is based on a set of thirteen "keys" or true-false questions assessing the strength and performance of the incumbent party in the White House.
  • Harris and Trump are neck-and-neck in the 2024 race for the White House. In aReal Clear Politics average of national polls, Harris leads Trump by 1.7 percentage points. It's even closer when it comes to polling averages from the battleground states. Trump leads Harris by 1.1 percentage points in Arizona, for example, and Harris leads Trump by 0.3 percentage points in Wisconsin.
  • Gambling lines are in Trump's favor. As of Oct. 18, Trump's probability of winning topped 61% on Polymarket, a crypto trading platform, for the first time since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Betfair Exchange, the biggest U.K. peer-to-peer betting platform, predicted on its temperature gauge Thursday morning that Trump would likely win. Presidential election betting can't be done legally in the U.S.

Yes, early voting for the general election begins Oct. 25 and runs through Nov. 3. Early voting sites are open the first five days of early voting from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the last five early voting days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. All registered voters can vote early.
